Narpani Convention 2011 & Launch of IAECs' 35th Anniversary Celebrations & Narpani Commemorative Book

The Indian Activity Executive Committees (IAECs) turn 35 years old next year.  To commemorate the 35th Anniversary Celebrations and with the intent to deepen community integration and to strive towards a cohesive society, The People’s Association Indian Activities Executive Committees Council or also known as Narpani Pearavai organised this convention on Sunday, 17 July 2011 at Swissotel, The Stamford with a focus to further strengthen the working partnerships between the IAECs.

There were about 1,200 participants of all ages and estates at the Convention.   Deputy Prime Minister (DPM) & Minister for Finance and Manpower Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam graced the convention as the Guest-of-Honour. In his speech, DPM highlighted the need to bring the young into the various organisations and to give them the space to pursue their own initiatives.  He also urged the community to rise above parochialism and to help families in need of assistance.

An highlight of the event was the signing of the memorandums of Understanding (MOU) between Narpani Pearavai and Singapore Indian Development Association (SINDA), Singapore Indian Education Trust (SIET) and the Singapore Indian Association (IA). The MOUs were a clear indication of Narpani Pearavai and the IAECs’ intent to continue forging close ties with the partners in areas of education, financial assistance and sports

DPM Tharman launched a revamped Narpani Pearavai  website which incorporates more interactive features and a webpage for all IAECs.  “The new-looking website allows us to publicise our programmes and activities which will definitely encourage more people to participate in our events” said Mr Joseph Steven, Chairman of Chua Chu Kang CC IAEC.

Best practices of IAECs on current and pressing concerns such as engaging residents, youth, interaction with new citizens & PRs and volunteer recruitment were shared with the participants.  “The sharing was indeed a good way to disseminate ideas and tips to the participants which they can apply in their own IAECs” said Mrs Prabha Chandran Seth, Chairperson of Thomson CC IAEC.

In a fitting finale to the convention, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong launched the  Narpani Commemorative Book.  The Commemorative Book entitled “Our Journey – Building and Bridging Communities”, chronicles the history and development of the IAECs since the first IAEC was formed at Kallang CC in 1977.  This launch also marked the beginning of the celebrations of the 35th Anniversary of the IAECs in 2012.  “This coffee table book will be a milestone for the Narpani movement that traces IAECs’ rich history and progress.  Through this publication, Narpani Pearavai salutes all the past and present IAEC members for their selfless and passionate service in building and bridging communities” said Ms Sithara Doriasamy, Vice-Chairman of PA Narpani Pearavai and a key member of the Editorial Team.

PM Lee Hsien Loong noted in his speech that it was critical for the IAECs to engage the youth and to integrate new citizens.  He mingled with the participants during a networking tea session after the convention.
